Today’s Work Chronicles…

Are a 2-in-1, starting with yesterday.

•I was able to put the 4 years of High School Spanish to use when a Spanish speaking family was going the wrong way to get to a room.
Me: Excusa me (‘excuse me’…for those who don’t speak Spanish)
Them: 👀
Me: 👈🏾 (Go that way in sign language)
El Fin (The End in Spanish)
I later learned that was the wrong translation…it should have been perdóneme. I didn’t say I was fluent 🤷🏾‍♀️

On to last night….the International Civil Rights Center & Museum had its annual family reunion, while also recognizing and celebrating a few champions of justice!

Pic 1: Every family has a matriarch. She is the matriarch of our table and practically the ROOM. We look forward to seeing her EVERY year. She and her daughter inquired about my mother and I explained she would be back next year after her knee is replaced. This pic was taken after she raised her leg to show me how flexible she is after having her hip replaced so that I may encourage my mother to not worry about her replacement.
Pic 2: Every family has a pastor. He is one of Winston-Salem’s, who also does not mind causing disruption to create change. Because of him, y’all’s president will forever be referenced as “46-1.” Wonder if I can get that on a Earbob?
Pic 3: There is always a family member who is “different” but comes to the reunion and fits right in. This is her…the first white student to enroll in Tougaloo College and the first white Delta. She plays no games and her quote is symbolic of my motto, “I’ll ride, but drop me off before we die.”

The highlight of my night was when I got to talk to MY CHANCELLOR…Dr. Harold Martin. My feelings were hurt by the amount of laughter he gave when I asked him how much I could pay him to return to WSSU (inbox me for a location if you are looking to fight me 💁🏾‍♀️)? He was also incredibly willing to assist me with guiding Michai’s science interests. He is one the few who could ever get me to speak on the pride of an Aggie (my stomach turns as I think of saying Aggie Pride).

The night ended with an intense political discussion with my +1 and friend, Tarina. We agreed she will learn how to disrupt the system and I’ll implement the disruption.

As I type, two residents are discussing their experience(S) in jails and prisons “all across the country.” 😱 One more weekend of my regular schedule, then I’m off to slanging cakes. #CalgonTakeMeAway
