Today’s Volunteer Work Chronicles…
Hosted ~200 WSSU NC-MSEN scholars and parents at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church (where I’m known as the peach cobbler lady 🤦🏾) for an Awards Day Brunch. The food was delectable, the hospitality (from planning to clean up) was heartwarming and the encouragement in the room was needed.
I’ve been the program’s PTA president for only a few months and it’s the HARDEST work I’ve done. I resigned today and am handing over the responsibilites to the incredibly intelligent Kismet Loftin-Bell, who I know will elevate the program and the scholars.
I would like to thank the previous board for leaving us with a hefty bank account, my board for their support and gift, the program’s coordinators and their staff, WSSU staff, parents, grandparents, scholars and all of you who supported us during the Dewey’s Holiday Store. Denise James and Dina Goddard for listening to me fuss and complain about lackluster parenting and people not keeping their word, and for also giving me the “ok” to resign (they know I will keep pushing). My teenager who I had to wake lots of nights to help me close the store, count the money and stock the shelves, but he never complained (I think he heard me say I was doing it for him too many times).
I’m not leaving the bank account with nearly as much money as I received it, nor were we able to distribute as much scholarship money (~$5000) as we’d hoped because we didn’t raise enough. I told the audience our children deserve better but PARENTS HAVE TO DO BETTER. I said what I said and I meant what I said!
