Today’s Racial Equity Reflection/Parenting Chronicles…

There is a section where we discussed the definition of being marked. We compared two universities and two banking institutions. For the sake of being in Durham, we were given UNC-CH and NCCU. Criteria…date founded, what it’s marked as and amount of endowment (Google it)?

White, Jewish instructor discussed the fact that in order to understand racism, everything should be marked so let’s label UNC-CH as a HWCU. That didn’t sit well. There were grumblings and a question of…”Aren’t HBCU grads happy and proud of having gone to a HBCU?” Me: We had no choice because what is being proven is we couldn’t attend other universities 🙄

We discussed language barriers as being causes for discrimination in the LatinX, Asian and Native American communities. I mentioned the fact that language (verbal and nonverbal) is an issue in the Black community too.

I’m not going to even talk about the conversation about money vs. wealth and how black folk’s money goes backwards while white people’s money goes forward for generations. Nor will I mention how I get different looks and comments when I wear my “Feminists Will Call You Out” Earbobz vs. “Hella Black, Hella Proud”

Moving on to Michai…

He got a check for his birthday
Him: Will you cash that?
Me (with my back turned because I’m laughing) : Yes, I’ll deposit it in your savings account
Him: That’s exactly where I don’t want that to go. I need the cash for shoes
Me: Who is giving you the balance cause there is no more Stride Rite for you 🤣
Him: Mom, just stop.
Me: 🙄
